Southwest Farmers Market Opens Inaugural Season with Planting Party and Community Celebration

Minneapolis, MN — The Southwest Farmers Market, operated by Neighborhood Roots — which also operates the Kingfield and Nokomis Farmers Markets — is excited to announce its grand opening on Saturday, May 17, 2025, from 8:30 AM to 1:00 PM at the Mount Olivet Church parking lot (50th and Logan Ave S). This inaugural market season kicks off with a Planting Party featuring local vendors, family-friendly activities, and an opportunity to support the market’s growth through a new member program.
Open every Saturday through the end of October, the Southwest Farmers Market will feature a vibrant mix of local produce, ready-to-eat food vendors, rotating live music, and seasonal events. Whether you're shopping for your weekly groceries, meeting neighbors, or just enjoying a Saturday morning, the market is a great place to connect with your community.
Planting Party and Local Seedlings
Sponsored by Blissful Bee Gardening, the Planting Party invites visitors to plant their own seedlings with provided soil and pots. Patrons are also encouraged to bring their own pots to participate. Local growers Foxtail Farm, Growing Lots, and Peter’s Pumpkins and Carmen’s Corn will offer a variety of seedlings for purchase, including:
Fresh herbs: cilantro, dill, chamomile, sage, parsley, thyme, mint, oregano, tarragon, chives, and basil
Salad staples: lettuce, broccoli, cabbage, and brassicas
Tomatoes, peppers, tomatillos, eggplant
Beautiful flowers: nasturtium, zinnia, marigold
And much more!
Kids’ Planting and Art with the Power of Produce Club
Visit the North Star Art Club booth, where children can decorate small pots and plant seeds to take home, making for a fun and interactive experience at the market. This is just one of many activities planned for the Power of Produce Club! We offer PoP on the first and third Saturdays of each month. Kids aged 4-12 can participate in the activity and earn a $2 token to spend on fruits and veggies!
